Five Iron Friday #6

"This house is haunted by the ghost of Adam Smith,
The Wealth of Nations and the further death of innocence.
To rule the world, the desire of every man,
The earth is shaking,
There are giants in the land.

See the blood red sun is rising,
On the broken carnage from the darkest days.
Giants locked together arm and arm,
Pushing all the meek out of the way."
-Giants, by FIF

There aren't many ways for us to remain here. We can live our lives, own incredible things, homes and sweet cars, and boats, and monkeys. For goodness sake monkeys.

But someday all of those memories, even the best stories, are going to be forgotten.

There are only a few ways to put some of these things into cement. To keep them going.

One way is to crush everybody. Rather than extinguishing your flame in the basement, you go out in a blaze of glory. It is the most horrible way to make a name for yourself.

It isn't a whole lot different from "pushing all the meek out of the way". Belittling others to make a name for yourself. Buy our product, you're not good enough.

But even beyond all of this, which sounds, and is, extreme. The very normal, very distant and indefferential way of life that we all know and love of blessing those who bless us. Has destroyed the message.

It is all too common for groups and individuals to refrain from challenging themselves with the greater goods. You know, the actually difficult things in life, like loving out enemies. Like forgiving (at cost to one's self, even putting one's self in danger). To love with abandon.

When that kind of thing happens, which God help me, I try to do more of. We need help. We step into the story, and create movements. They are not movements that even need to talk. That need a slogan, or a banner, or program. No catch phrases here. It is harder than that. It is in the doing.

He never said "Talk like me, I mean, really, do your best to sound good."

In fact, quite the contrary: Matthew 15:8 "These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me."

What do you want to be remembered for?
